Why Therapy is a Must for Pre-Seed Founders

I used to think I didn’t need therapy. I didn’t feel like anything was “wrong” with my mental health, so I had no real reason to try it. That changed when I founded a company. I decided to try therapy because I knew running a company would take an emotional toll. Two years later, I’m still doing it — and loving it. Here’s why I believe all pre-seed founders should do it, too:

1/ The pre-launch phase of a start-up is a mind f*ck.

It’s hard to build a product without anyone using it in the first place! There are many times in this phase when you question whether you’re building the right thing at all. Talking out your thoughts of uncertainty help.

2/ You need to up your emotional game.

Running a company (well) requires strong emotional awareness. I think of therapy as a way to actively work on my emotional fitness just like I work on my physical fitness in the gym. It’s paying off so far.

3/ Without therapy, you probably don’t know your blind spots.

One way therapy has been most helpful for me as a founder has been to help me achieve a MUCH deeper sense of self-awareness. Based on my experience, self-awareness is the most important skill required for leading authentically, and leading authentically is a must-do if you want people to follow you.
